Animal Control
The City of Miramichi provides Animal Control Services by way of a contract. The Animal Control Officer, who reports directly to police administration, is responsible for the following duties:
Enforce all By-Laws of the City of Miramichi pertaining to animals within the City.
Be available to respond to animal control complaints between the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday and able to respond to emergency calls after hours.
Be available and able to respond to emergency calls only on a twenty-four (24) hour basis Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
Respond to all calls, requests or inquiries relating to animals within the City, that the Department of Natural Resources and Energy are not mandated to cover. This includes the removal and/or disposal of any injured animals or nuisance wildlife.
Be licensed by the Province of New Brunswick to operate a Nuisance Wildlife Enterprise or have access to a party who is so licensed and contracted to provide the service.
Make available to the general public, upon request, metal animal traps for use with the City of Miramichi. Will also be required to retrieve the cages, and any animals contained therein, after receiving a request to do so.
Sell licenses and maintain accurate records as outlined in By-Law No. 8 respecting Animal Control.
Maintain records and submit a written monthly report to the office of the Chief of Police on all complaints received and number of traps distributed.
Hold animals suspected of being rabid for such a period of time as may be required by the Health of Animals Branch of the Federal Government, or any provincial or federal legislation.
Operate, or have access to, an animal shelter capable of providing adequate accommodations for animal impounded.
