Fire Prevention

The City of Miramichi Fire Department is committed to preventing fires and injuries, in accordance with provincial fire and building codes ensuring compliance to regulations, and to address noncompliance. Our main focus when performing inspections is Life Safety by having safe buildings and to provide risk reduction awareness to building owners and occupants in the event of a fire or emergency in the building.

Some of our key activities include;

  • Promoting Awareness and Educating to our community about fire safety and prevention measures

  • Conducting fire and life safety inspections to make sure that all necessary fire prevention and safety measures are in place and being maintained

  • In addition, we provide the following services and education initiatives that the public can take advantage of on request;

  • Inspections on a complaint

  • Fire Safety Presentations for Schools, Seniors, Daycares and the general public

  • Fire Extinguisher Training

  • Fire Station Tours & Truck Appearances

  • Residential Smoke Alarm Installation Program

Fire Safety Tips.

  • Make sure your home has working smoke alarms. Smoke alarms are required on every storey and outside of all sleeping areas.

    • Test smoke alarms monthly

    • Change the batteries once a year

    • Replace smoke alarms after 10 years

    • Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with everyone in your household

    If you are in need of a smoke alarm, the Miramichi Fire Department provides free units for residents (while supplies last).

  • Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colourless gas created when fuels like gasoline, wood, propane burn incompletely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel are potential sources of carbon monoxide.

    WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING?

    Exposure to carbon monoxide can cause flu-like symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, burning eyes, confusion, drowsiness and even loss of consciousness, without the elevated temperature associated with the flu. In severe cases, carbon monoxide poisoning can cause brain damage and death. The elderly, children and people with heart or respiratory conditions may be particularly sensitive to carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide can poison the body quickly in high concentrations, or slowly over long periods of time.

    Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. Carbon monoxide alarms works by monitoring for airborne concentration levels (parts per million) of carbon monoxide over time and sound an alarm when harmful levels are present. They are designed to sense low carbon monoxide concentrations over a long period of time as well as high concentrations over a short period of time.

  • Not all emergencies can be seen from the street, but civic numbers can be. Ensure your house number is clearly displayed so emergency responders can find you quickly. Click Where and how should I display my civic number? for guidelines to displaying a civic number.

    Number Plates “Blue Plates” are highly visible civic number plates, are available for residents by contacting the Blue Plate Supplier – Sign Warehouse Inc. 506.778.8002. If you live outside the municipality, in a rural or unincorporated area such as a Local Service District, contact the NB 9-1-1 Bureau for your civic number (Blue Plate) or Click HERE for more information.

  • Within the City of Miramichi, Fire Prevention Week is observed annually during October to bring awareness and encourage our residents to be prepared!

    During the week our fire department members visit schools in our community delivering crucial fire prevention and safety tips with the goal to reduce the risk to fires and aiding our youth in becoming fire smart. The Fire Department also hosts the annual Hector Fournier / Firefighter Memorial Day that bring together fire service leaders from fire departments across the Miramichi Valley Firefighter association to honour fallen firefighters.
